Around the Town

Introduction:

There are many types of transportation around Salaya. You may even find that some of the ways Thai people travel are the same as people in cities in the United States.

How do people get around?:

People get around by car, taxi, grab and bus. Cars and taxis are pretty normal modes of transportation, so let's dive a bit deeper into the "grab" and bus. A grab is Thailand's version of Uber, the rideshare company. A grab is a service you can call through an app on your phone or through a website. Grabs can pick you up wherever you are in the city and take you wherever you need to go. However, grabs are the most expensive out of all four transportation types. A grab is usually almost double the cost of a taxi ride!

In addition, the public bus is another means of transportation. The bus can go from Salaya (where my school is located), 19 miles all the way into Bangkok! The bus is the cheapest way to travel. A ride from Salaya to Bangkok on the public bus is 23 Baht. That is 70 cents in U.S. dollars!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

Trying the taxi for the first time was pretty difficult because the driver could not understand me. I had to use short, specific vowel sounds just so he could understand a part of what I said.
