Dear All,

I hope that this Journal finds you well!

My name is Robert Sylvester, but you can call me Bobby. I am currently a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Taichung, Taiwan. This means that I work for the American Institute in Taiwan and teach English in some of Taiwan’s elementary schools.

I teach at three schools; Jian Guo, Da Yang and Jia Nan. The school year just started in late August. I will be here until it finishes in late June of next year. All students in Taiwan start studying English in Third Grade, if not earlier. Do you study another language at school?

Many of you may be wondering how did I end up in Taiwan? To fully answer that question, I have to tell you a little about myself.

The story starts back in Boston, Massachusetts where I was born in 1993. Can you figure out how old I am?

I grew up in a small town called Upton. I eventually went to a private, all-boys, Catholic high school that was a few towns over. My school is called St. John’s. At St. John’s, I had to choose a foreign language to study and I had three options, French, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese. I chose Mandarin Chinese because I thought that it was different. That decision changed my life.
