Hey guys! My name is Nelson, but you can call me Nelly. I’m super excited to be sharing this journey with you and getting to know all of you over the next couple of months. What makes this even more special is that I get to do it with Ms. Rodriguez’s class! Fun fact: I was once one of her 5th graders, just like you. Back then, the iPhone 5 was brand new, TikTok didn’t exist and Barack Obama was still President. I had just moved to Miami from Cuba, and I was one of the ESOL kids in her class. I remember having so much fun that year!
Now, I’m 21 years old. I graduated from G. Holmes Braddock High and now go to FIU. I’m studying political science, which means I read and write a lot about history, laws, government and politics. That makes sense because social studies was my favorite subject back in Ms. Rodriguez’s class. One day, I want to go to law school and become a lawyer.
I first heard about studying abroad when I started college. At first, I thought only kids with rich parents could do it, so I didn’t think it was possible for me. But I didn’t give up. I researched, watched YouTube vlogs, talked to advisors, saved money from my Starbucks job and applied for scholarships. Little by little, I realized this dream was possible for me!
