Nature in Tasmania

People often think Tassie devils are energetic, aggressive, and even dangerous, but they are not. The Tassie devil I saw looked a little sleepy and definitely didn’t look very scary!

Where does it live?:

Tassie devils live on the island of Tasmania. They live in the mountains, by the ocean or anywhere they can find shelter and are a nice hiding spot. They=se animals don’t like people, so you won’t see them in cities or urban neighborhoods.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Tassie devils are very shy animals, so they usually hide under logs, in bushes or in burrows. Tassie devils are also nocturnal, meaning they are awake at night. This tendency can help them find food while other animals are sleeping. Sometimes Tassie devils hunt for food, but they are usually scavengers that eat animals that have already died. Devils will eat wallabies, birds, reptiles, amphibians and anything else they can find.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Tasmanian devils are endangered. We worry about Tasmanian devils getting hit by cars because they are often out and about at night when the roads are dark. We also worry about a particular disease that Tasmanian devils can get, called Devil Facial Tumor Disease. This can cause the animals to become sick and die. People in Tasmania are very passionate about protecting the Tasmanian devil.
