Omesh's Life in India

What jobs do your parents have?:

Omesh: "My mother is a house wife and my mama is a guide and a teacher...he also runs a company called [the] Benares Cultural Foundation."

Mama is one of the Hindi words for "uncle." Ajay, my host dad, is Omesh's uncle and Poonam's brother. Ajay is like a father to Omesh.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

Omesh: "There are basically two timings. In the summer [we start at] 7:15 and in the winter [we start at] 8. In the summer...I come home around 2:20. If it's winter, I come home around 3."

They start earlier in the summer in order to escape the heat of the afternoon.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Omesh: "I get to school using a bus. It is yellow in color with the name of the school."

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

Omesh: "We go to [a] playground and eat under the shed. I like [all foods] except vegetables."

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

Omesh: "Hindi, but I talk to teachers in English. I talk to my friends in Hindi."

In Hindi, "hello" is namaste.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Omesh: "Ayush, Aditya, Aradhya, Shiva, Yuvraj."

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

Omesh: "Till class tenth we study around 6 different subjects. English, Maths, Science, SST [social studies], Third Language [Sanskrit or French], and AI/Art/Music. I took AI and Sanskrit.
