The Mystery of Sweden's Red Rose Hips

Where does it live?:

Wild roses can live in many different places. They are commonly found along woodland edges, fields, hedges, roadsides and other open areas. They grow naturally across much of Europe, including Scandinavia.

The plant I found was growing near my housing area in Sweden, next to a grassy area and sidewalk.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

The wild rose has some clever ways of surviving!

First, its thorns help protect it from animals that might want to eat the plant. Its branches can also grow and climb through nearby plants, helping the rose reach sunlight.

The plant also makes bright-red rose hips that contain seeds. Animals, especially birds, can eat the fruit and help spread the seeds to new places. This gives the plant a way to reproduce and grow in difficult areas.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Wild rose plants are pretty tough, but they can still be harmed by insects, plant diseases and drought, as well as by animals eating too many of their leaves or branches. People can also harm them by cutting them down or removing the areas where they grow.

Wild roses are common in Sweden and can grow in many different environments. In fact, the bush I found had lots of healthy leaves and rose hips, which is a good sign!
