The part of the project I am working on includes creating the microscopic component of the stent in formations called organoids. Organoids are multiple types of cells grown together. These organoids are special because the multiple cell types inside work together, attaching to form larger globs which mimic organs in the body and even develop veins on their own!
In practice, once the biodegradable stent, complete with organoids, is placed, it will help the body heal. To recap, the reason we want to put these organoids into the stent before it is placed into the body is because by having multiple types of cells in the stent already, the body will grow more quickly around the stent and this will help the bile duct repair itself in a more safe and gentle manner. In the end, this research could help people have fewer surgeries and less pain, which is why I enjoy this work and think it is so important!
