Since arriving in London in January, I have experienced several traditions that show how culture brings communities together. From celebrating Pancake Day and enjoying a proper pancake, while learning about its religious history, to witnessing the vibrant Chinese New Year festivities, and even enjoying a proper British tea, I have seen how traditions shape everyday life in England. These experiences have helped me understand how London’s history, religion, and community influence the way people celebrate and connect with one another.
I learned about quite a few traditions while I’ve been in London! I’ve seen some of Pancake Day and Chinese New Year while I’ve been in London. I’ve also gotten the opportunity to try a very proper British tea.
Pancake Day is rooted in the history of using up all the rich, tasty ingredients before Lent, which includes butter, sugar, milk, and eggs. Since Lent was traditionally a time of fasting and giving things up, sugary and rich items are usually not consumed. Shrove Tuesday ends up being the last day to use up all of these items (butter, sugar, milk, eggs); and therefore, pancakes become a lovely solution!
