After several months living in Mexico City, I got to experience rural Mexico for the first time over winter break. The parents of my husband, Sam, are from the state of Michoacán on the western side of Mexico. Sam lived in this region for about seven years as a teenager and young adult, and he hadn't been back to visit in over ten years! So, we planned a trip over winter break to visit his aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout the states of Colima and Michoacán.
Our trip started with an overnight bus ride on December 17th, arriving the next morning at the coastal town of Manzanillo in the state of Colíma. We enjoyed relaxing for the afternoon on Manzanillo's beautiful beach, sipping fresh coconut water and eating tasty seafood!
The next day, we headed to a small town called Ranchito, Michoacán. We visited a cousin of Sam's mother, Tía Lila. Even though December is the "cool" season, it was nearly 90 degrees every day! I got heat stroke one day because I wasn't used to the hot weather. I had to stay indoors, rest, and hydrate well. Thankfully, I was better the next day and we were able to enjoy visiting with relatives and going to a nearby beach.
From Ranchito, we took a taxi up into the mountains of Michoacán.
