Sticky Rice! A Laos Staple

Introduction:

Hello, everyone! I am so excited to be writing to you from Laos! Laos is a country very far away from the United States. I had to take three different planes to get here! I have lived in Laos for two months. One of my favorite things to do here is try new foods.

What food did I try?:

People in Laos eat lots of rice! The main type is called “sticky rice” or khao niao (cow knee-ow). People also like very spicy food. Do you dip your french fries in ketchup? People in Laos like to dip their sticky rice into a spicy red sauce called jeow bong.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I loved sticky rice! You can eat it with almost anything. People often eat it with grilled meat or fish. The best part is that you can roll the sticky rice into little balls with your hands!

How is the food prepared?:

Sticky rice is soaked in water overnight. This helps to make the rice soft. The next day, the rice is steamed in a special cone-shaped basket made out of bamboo. Then, it is served warm in a little woven basket called a thip khao.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Many people in Laos are farmers. They grow rice to eat and sell. Farmers also grow their own spicy peppers that people use to make the dipping sauces.
