Life on the Isle of Lewis

How do you get around?:

I live in the main town, so I just walk around. The places in the Isle of Lewis are quite far apart, so you have to drive or get a bus. There’s only one high school on the island, so some of my friends would have to wake up at five A.M. and take a two-hour bus just to get to school in time. All the buses and shops close at six P.M. My town doesn’t have any chain restaurants, so we have to take a two-hour ferry just to get Pizza Hut!

What types of clothing do you like to wear?:

It depends on the coat. I have a casual and formal coat, so I style my outfits based on which one I’m wearing. For shoes, I wear trainers [sneakers], which are the Nike Air Force 1. I also really like skateboard brand clothes, which means quite baggy clothes.

What do you like to do in your free time?:

I like reading, and I read classics and crime mostly. I really like The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh. The movie for Trainspotting was filmed in Edinburgh, so it’s pretty famous. Sometimes, another thing I’ll do is the peats. “Doing the peats” means to dig up dirt from the ground and use it to make a fire. My granny does it, and she’s 80!

What language(s) do you speak? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

I speak English and Gaelic. Hello is just Halò. Good morning is Madainn mhàth, and good afternoon is Feasgair mhàth. When I visit my granny’s house, I have to speak Gaelic the entire time I’m there.
