Fueling the Body!

Introduction:

Montreal is known for foods such as bagels, smoked meat, and poutine. Read on to learn about my experience with poutine!

What food did I try?:

I tried poutine (poo-teen), a traditional Quebecois dish with fries and gravy, at a restaurant called Bar Mollie with some friends.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I was very disappointed when I tried the dish because the fries were soggy and the gravy wasn't thick or creamy. Choosing the correct place to eat poutine is difficult since it's a very popular dish that many places serve, including McDonald's!

How is the food prepared?:

The traditional dish includes fries topped with gravy and cheese curds. Some restaurants will add other toppings such as chicken, shrimp, pork, vegetables, or bacon.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

"Poutine" is a Quebecois slang word that means "mess." Fernand Lachance, a restaurant owner, created the dish in 1957 after a regular customer, Eddy Lainesse, suggested mixing cheese and fries together. He exclaimed, "Ça va faire une maudite poutine!" (Roughly translated: "It will make a mess!") and thus, the dish got its name.
