Spaghetti Ice Cream

Introduction:

Germans love ice cream. This is evident by the dozens of ice cream parlors that exist in each city. These parlors have everything you might expect as well as a dish that you don't want to miss.

What food did I try?:

One of my favorite dishes in Germany is called Spaghettieis (Spaghetti Ice Cream). While it sounds like an Italian abomonation, this dessert actually comes from Germany. And don't worry, there isn't actually any pasta involved.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I am always very happy when eating Spaghettieis - especially if I get to share it with a friend. Usually, I eat it on a hot day when I'm out shopping or after a day at the pool.

How is the food prepared?:

First, cold whipped cream is heaped into a small mound in a wide, shallow bowl. Sometimes this is then put in the freezer for a few minutes so it's extra cold. Then, the ice cream flavor of choice is extruded through a tool called a Spätzlepresse, which is similar to a potato ricer, so it comes out in long ropes that look like spaghetti. Finally, toppings are put on the Spaghettieis. My favorite is strawberry sauce, fresh strawberries and little white chocolate shavings that look like parmigiana, but many people get chocolate sauce, nuts or other fruits as well. Don't forget the little wafer cookie!
