Many of their instruments and costumes are made out of animal skin. As they sing, they beat the sekupu (drum) to the tune of their singing. The drum is made out of cowhide and a 200-liter barrel. For smaller drums, they use smaller metal paint tins. Cowhide is stretched across each side of the bucket. Sekupu provides the necessary beats that go along with the singers.
Lechoba, made from a cow or horse tail, plays an important role in the dance. When a cow is slaughtered, the tail is removed. When the tail is dried, it is used to create a swaying motion during the performance. Other materials used to create the lechoba could be shredded plastic from sacks.
Dancers also hold thebe (small shields) and wear hats made from cat skin, known as kuoane, adding to the visual and cultural richness of the performance.
