Life as a Slovak Kid

Her mom is a secondary school teacher. She teaches English to high school-aged students. Her dad is the principal at the same school. Both stressful and important jobs in education!

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

“My school starts at eight o’clock in the morning. I get home every day at different times. It depends on after-school activities or courses I have. Sometimes it is about 5:00 pm, other days at 6:30 pm.”

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

She goes to school in a car with her parents because they all work or study in Skalica. When she gets older, she says she will probably travel to school by public bus. It is very common in Slovakia for kids to travel to school by public transportation and by themselves. It is quite safe in town for them to travel this way.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

Alyssa eats lunch in her school canteen. A canteen is like their version of a cafeteria. Her favorite dish to eat is chicken with rice or mashed potatoes.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

At school, she speaks Slovak or the Skalica dialect of Slovak. A dialect is a form of language that is used in a part of a region. The Skalica dialect is a mixture of Western Slovak and Czech. To say hello, she says “Ahoj.”

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Some of the common names at her school are Emma, Nina, Linda, Sofia, Oliver, Martin and Samuel. People in Slovakia have many of the same names, which allows them to celebrate name days.
