Traveler Bio

Greetings from Thailand! My name is Liam Byrnes, and I have the privilege of currently living and working in a small town called Yang Talat. It is located in the northeastern part of Thailand, called Issan. This area is known for its distinct food (very spicy!) and culture.

Each week, I teach English to around 450 Mattayom (American equivalent of 7th-12th grade) students. The numbers can be a tad challenging, but I love interacting with so many different students on a weekly basis. We practice language learning through speaking, listening and games! I have been very welcome in my new community, and I’m so lucky to be here.

I received this opportunity through a grant called the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship. Prior to departing on this adventure, I graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where I studied music and political science. My primary areas of musical study were trombone and voice. I think music is a fantastic way to communicate with others, and it has been very rewarding to already see the way music can transcend language barriers!

I'm so excited for you to join this journey. This virtual exchange is a phenomenal way for us to explore important and timely questions about culture and learning. Let’s get started!
