Arancini: Rice-based deliciousness!

Introduction:

Rome has so many different cheap, "on the go" foods I can try for lunch or even just for merenda (snack). Arancini is a popular Italian food which originally comes from Sicily. Sicily is an island off of the peninsula of Italy and I visited it two weeks ago! It is a rice ball that is coated in bread crumbs and fried. It can be filled with all sorts of rice and fillings. It can be a variety of different sizes as well. The arancino (the singular version of the plural "arancini") I ate was the size of a baseball! A typically arancini might have tomato sauce and cheese.

What food did I try?:

This week I tried an arancini with squid-ink flavored rice that was filled with squid.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

Personally, I love seafood or frutti di mare (which literally translates to "fruits of the sea"). So even before I tried it, I assumed I would like it and I did!  I liked it so much that I said "YUM!" out loud after my first bite and startled an old woman walking her dog. I also was a little bit worried that the squid ink would stain my lips and teeth black, but thankfully it didn't.

Eating arancini also made me happy because it is similar to a Japanese food: onigiri.
