Elephants in the Wild

Introduction:

This weekend, I went on a game drive where we were able to drive around Chobe National Park and see many different animals. My favorite was the elephants, which are part of the big five safari animals. Botswana is known for its elephants, having 130,000 of them around the country, which is one-third of the world's population.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

The elephants are huge creatures growing taller than the truck we were in. They have gray wrinkly skin and large white tusks they use for stripping bark from trees or clearing paths for them to travel. Elephants are strong enough to knock down a small- to medium-sized tree. The reason they do this is so they can reach the trees' leaves to eat.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

At first when I saw the elephants, I was in shock at how large and strong they were! Then I saw the baby elephants running after their mothers and trying to keep up, which was very cute. However, one time we got too close to the babies. The mother made a trumpeting noise and charged at us to protect her baby. In that moment, I was terrified!

Where does it live?:

Elephants mostly live in Sub-Saharan Africa and some in Southeast Asia. Since they are so popular in Botswana, they will try sometimes to enter local villages only to be scared off by the people living there.
