Q & A with a Local Student

My parents pay monthly for a scheduled taxi driver to take me. My junior school was much closer in the same neighborhood so we walked there.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

I eat lunch at school in the classroom or outside. They serve breakfast at 10am and lunch at 1:30pm, usually the same macaroni and chicken every day.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

At school, they force us to speak English, but I mostly speak Setswana to friends. In Setswana, we say “Dumela,” which means hello.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:
  • Keneilwe - meaning "I am given," pronounced: Ken-kneel-way
  • Naledi - means "star," pronounced: Nah-leh-dee
  • Hope - from the English word
  • One - meaning "the one," pronounced: Oh-nay
  • Pako - most popular name, no specific meaning, pronounced: Pa-co
What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

I am taking 9 subjects: physics, chemistry, biology, development studies, design and technology, math, English, Setswana and social studies/history. My favorite is design and technology, where we learn how things work like woodworking, plumbing and electrical. We bend metal and plastics to form useful things.

What is your homework like?:

My homework is mostly review of the lecture that day with questions on the content to turn in the next day.
