The ancient sites in Oaxaca: Monte Alban and Mitla

Photos

The preservation of ancient sites around the world help us to know our history
During the rainy season (June-August) the area around Monte Alban is beautifully green
There are six large structures that sit on top of a massive hilltop
We can tell a lot from archeological sites, including how the community collected water
When the "conquistadors" arrived, they often built their religious structure directly on top of the original indigenous structure
Even today, despite the forces of weathering, there is an incredible amount of detail in the stonework at Mitla
When these ancient cities were thriving, they also loved to keep gardens and to landscape the pathways through the city
Missionary churches sometimes hide the intricate pathways of the original indigenous structures beneath
