Sanitation Services & Environmental Racism in Salvador

But those communities experiencing the first-hand effects of the socioeconomic disparities and environmental racism have a simple answer: government accountability and political change. Communities are also calling for reparations for damages and loss of livelihood as well as increased federal measures to improve conditions. But simultaneously, Quilomboan leaders in Salvador are fighting for representation in government by pushing to elect Quilomboan women to positions of political power. At the same time, these individuals recognize that they are not the only ones experiencing hardship at the cost of harmful environmental practices—nature is hurting, too. By raising awareness and fighting for accountability, these communities are resiliently fighting against the harm inflicted on them (ThinkLandscape, p. 4-5).
