Bingsu: Lifesaver on a Hot Day

How is the food prepared?:

I did some research and learned that preparing bingsu is quite simple. First, you need whole milk and condensed milk. Both ingredients are combined and poured into a container to freeze. After a couple of hours, the ice is shaved into fine flakes. Nowadays, specialized devices are used for the shaving step. Last, it is time to add toppings such as fruit, ice cream, more condensed milk or all of the above. Even thinking about it makes me excited!

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Bingsu is a traditional Korean dessert. Originally, it was made out of shaved water-based ice topped with fruits, and it dates back to the Joseon Dynasty. Eventually, after the Korean War and the influx of immigrants from the United States, condensed milk, chocolate, whipped cream and other ingredients were introduced. A popular flavor in modern Korea is patbingsu, which is the word for red bean shaved ice. Koreans have eaten red beans for over a thousand years, as it was believed that their red color could ward off evil. Nowadays, bingsu of all different flavors is a very popular dessert among Koreans and foreign tourists.
