Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

I traveled to Gulu, Uganda which is the country just above Rwanda. I studied the history of Uganda and met with many Ugandan citizens. We flew to Kampala, the capital, and are currently driving back to Rwanda. The drive back is well over eight hours long! The distance from Gulu to Kigali is 361 miles.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

So far, this trip to Gulu is the furthest that I have traveled so far.

How did I get around this week?:

Mostly on foot. Gulu is a very small town so restaurants and shops were at most a 15-minute walk. Transportation to site visits further away were arranged by my program via a bus.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The most interesting place that I visited this week was a refugee settlement. Have you learned much or anything about what a refugee is? It is someone who is forced to leave their country because of violence or political conflict. Uganda has the third highest refugee welcome rate in Africa. Since refugees cannot stay in their own country, governments like Uganda create programs to help individuals create a new life. We were able to interact and ask questions about their experiences leaving their home and it was really eye-opening.
