Every month, we head up to the reservoir and change the chlorine in the system with new chlorine. Then, the water is sent through pipes to the houses in my town. At this moment, the water still is not 100% safe to drink. This is why it is important to boil the water for 30 minutes to make sure all of the bacteria is removed.
This need is being partially met. The community has a water system that collects water from the mountains, filters it through a captación, and sends it to a reservoir where chlorine is added. The water is then distributed through pipes to the houses in town. However, the water is still not completely safe to drink when it reaches people’s homes. Because of this, families must boil their water to remove bacteria and make it safe. Community members and local leaders also help maintain the system by regularly changing the chlorine in the reservoir. This helps improve the quality of the water, but boiling it is still an important step to ensure it is safe to drink.
