Apple Season!

Introduction:

Apple picking is a fun fall activity for Montrealers, and you can find dozens of orchards within an hour of the city. My favorite variety is Empire, with its deep red and green colors and big crunch.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

We've all seen an apple! Apples can come in many colors, including red, green, yellow and pink. Quebec is best known for its McIntosh apples, which have a swirled pink and green coloring.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I couldn't wait to bake a pie!

Where does it live?:

There are apple orchards all over the province of Quebec and throughout Canada as well.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Apples are in season in September and October. They grow juicy and sweet from the summer's heat, and they're ready to pick before it starts snowing. In this way, the fruit is typically picked before the long winter. Apples have seeds, like any fruit. Deer, another species in this habitat, often eat the apples that drop off the tree. Later, after the deer has digested the fruit, the seeds are left in a new area. In this way, fruit trees will begin growing in new areas.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

The biggest threat to Quebec apples is climate change.
