Tasty Treats in the Netherlands

I got the traditional cinnamon-flavored cookies and the chocolate covered cookies. Sweets are used in breakfast as well! For example, Dutch people often spread butter on a piece of bread and top it off with chocoladehagel (chocolate sprinkles). However, my favorite treat by far, is the stroopwafel. This sweet snack comes in the form of a flat circle about the size of a small plate. The outside texture is similar to a waffle. The inside is dripping with a sweet, caramel-like goo.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I have had stroopwafels in a couple of different places. The first stroopwafel that I had was at the orientation for my Fulbright program. The organizers gave us a traditional Dutch breakfast (remember the chocoladehagel I mentioned earlier?) and left out a few bowls filled with mini, store-bought stroopwafels. These were a little bigger than a quarter and very sweet. I quickly fell in love with the treat! The second time, I had a large, homemade stroopwafel dipped in Belgian chocolate. This was in the town of Volendam, north of Amsterdam. I was drawn to the bakery by the smell of the special waffle-like batter drifting through the streets. Lastly, I had a crispy, smooth-textured stroopwafel at Lanksroon Bakery in Amsterdam. I decided to treat myself for my birthday! I bought a stroopwafel and sat on the edge of a canal to enjoy the view. As you can probably tell, stroopwafels are an addictive snack!

How is the food prepared?:

Stroopwafels are pretty easy to make! The batter is placed in a special waffle iron and the filling is made separately.
