In addition to being a teacher, I also volunteer around the city doing different things like tutoring and helping non-profits. I have loved living in Taipei so far. The food here is so delicious and the people are very nice.
In Taiwan, the main language everyone speaks is Mandarin Chinese. This was a big adjustment for me because I only studied it for one year before I came. When I arrived, I was able to have very basic conversations but it was hard to understand people when they would speak fast. It is also very difficult to read things like signs and menus because learning to read and write Chinese characters is one of the hardest things I have ever done! I have studied both French and Spanish in the past so I am no stranger to learning languages and have really enjoyed seeing all of my hard work pay off because now I can chat with my coworkers and students much more easily.
The best thing about living in Taiwan is how easy it is to get around! I don’t have a car or motorcycle here so I rely entirely on public transportation like buses, subways, and trains. I have been able to see so many beautiful places all over Taiwan just by taking a bus or train.
I look forward to telling you all about my adventures! Taiwan may not be the most famous country but I think it is a very special hidden gem with so many incredible experiences for visitors to have.
I can’t wait to take you along with me on this adventure. I love getting to share about how special this country is and I know you will love it, too! Until next time, 拜拜 (bài bài = bye)!
