My Food Adventure in Korea

Korean rice cakes are made with rice flour and water. The mixture is shaped and cooked until it becomes soft and chewy. Some are sweet, while others are served with a spicy sauce. One popular dish is called tteokbokki, which is chewy rice cakes covered in a spicy red sauce.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Food is an important part of Korean culture that brings friends and families together. In Korea, people sometimes greet each other by asking, "Have you eaten?" In Korean, they say "밥 먹었어?" (Bap meogeosseo?) or "밥 먹었어요?" (Bap meogeosseoyo?).

This question is a friendly way to show that you care about someone. It is similar to asking, "How are you?" in English. The person is not always asking if you have eaten. They are checking to see how you are doing!

Many Korean meals are also made to be shared. People often sit around a table and enjoy several small dishes together.

South Korea is surrounded by water on three sides. Because of this, seafood is an important part of many meals. People enjoy foods like fish, clams, oysters, and seaweed. Rice is another important food in South Korea, and it is used in many everyday meals and snacks, including rice cakes.

One thing I have learned is that food can teach us about a country's culture and way of life. By trying new foods, I am learning more about South Korea and the people who live here. I am excited to keep exploring and tasting new things!
