Fishing and Farming and Flooding, Oh My!

Fishing and farming are extremely common and important jobs in this region.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Heavy rains often cause flooding in the streets, as well as in shops and homes. The flooding can damage these homes and shops, and that damage takes considerable time and money to repair. Another challenge is the heat and strength of the sun. Vietnam is fairly close to the equator, which means the sun's rays are much stronger here. Many Vietnamese people wear large, cone-shaped hats to protect their faces from the sun.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

The Vietnamese have adapted well to their environment. First of all, they continue to improve farming and fishing strategies to take advantage of their fertile environment. In addition, they have taken steps to reduce the risk of damage from heavy rains and flooding. Many homes have been raised a foot or two to prevent floods from washing them away. Also, people know how to drive motorbikes through heavy rainwater!
