Achu, Cameroon's striking yellow soup!

Introduction:

Food in Cameroon is such an exciting topic! With over 250 ethnic groups, each boasting their own variety of culinary delicacies, you could theoretically try a different local dish every day for a year, and still not have tried every Cameroonian food.

What food did I try?:

Because I am working as an English teacher here in Cameroon, I have come into contact with many people who are originally from the Northwest and the Southwest regions. These two regions are anglophone (English-speaking), while the other 8 regions of the country are francophone (French-speaking). Unfortunately, due to a current political crisis, I am unable to visit the anglophone regions and see, taste and hear firsthand the cultures of many of my colleagues. However, I have been lucky enough to taste some popular dishes from the two regions. The dish that I will be highlighting for you all today has the most unique appearance of any food that I have ever seen. It is called Achu soup, and it is a delicacy of the Northwest region.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I was really excited to try achu, but also slightly nervous because it was unlike anything else I had ever eaten. I ate alongside one of my colleagues, and she helped me understand the best way to go about eating it with my hand.
