Surprises in South America!

Different species of animals live in the thick forest, such as parrots, bats, cougars and opossums. There are also no oceans by Paraguay because it is landlocked country. Therefore, the only bodies of water in the country are rivers and lakes. While there are not the typical fish that we find in the ocean, like flounder or sharks, there are many other types of fresh water creatures in Paraguay, like fresh water snakes and even alligators.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The abundance of fruit trees here make it easy for people to eat tasty treats throughout the year!  When I first moved into the house where I am renting my room, I was very amazed to find that there are multiple types of fruit and vegetable trees in my own backyard. For example, there are avacados, bananas, mangoes, oranges, limes, lemons, grapefruit, and a special type of fruit that is called 'Paraguayan coconut.' This 'Paraguayan coconut' is acutally more like a nut. It is very small and you have to crack open the shell in order to get the edible part inside! Since these fruit trees are in all parts of the city and the countryside, people have easy access to these foods and incorporate them into their diet, as a result. For example, many people will put lime in a special drink, usually either tereré or mate. Both drinks are made from local herbs found in the environment. The difference between the two is that tereré is served cold with lots of ice, for the summer, while mate is hot, and, therefore, mosquitos popular in the winter.
