Transportation in Moldova

Introduction:

Although it may appear complicated at first, Moldova can be easy to explore on public transportation if you get to know the system. Because it is a fairly small country, you do not have to traverse great distances to see different parts of Moldova.

How do people get around?:

The main modes of public transportation in Moldova are trolley buses (buses connected to overhead power lines), and rutierras (minibuses, or large vans that can usually seat about 20 people). While trolley buses can be found in larger towns like mine, rutierras are the main form of intercity transportation. For those living in more inaccessible parts of Moldova, it is common to have the phone numbers of rutierra drivers to inquire about their scheduled routes. For more popular routes, there is a website called autogara.md which publishes the schedules of the rutierras. Many families own cars, often Ladas or Dacias from the Soviet times, or in the villages, people travel by horse cart.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At first, I was a little intimidated by taking the rutierras, because I did not know the system or schedules. However, with the help of locals and Peace Corps Volunteers, I quickly got used to the system.
