Ăn Cơm Chưa? (Have You Eaten Yet?)

However, maybe you haven’t seen or eaten fruits like dragon fruit or “durian.” Dragon fruits are usually pink and green in color and are either purple or white on the inside, depending on which kind you buy. Dragon fruits do not have much taste, kind of like watermelon, but they taste a little bit like kiwi. Durian is another food that some people are afraid to try. The outer part of durian fruits is green and spiky and the inside is yellow and looks like thick yogurt or scrambled eggs. Durian is very very sweet, but the main reason why some people are afraid to try it is because of the smell. At first, the smell to me was kind of like rotten eggs. Now, though, I’m used to it, and I sometimes enjoy a little bit of durian with friends.

What food did I try?:

This past week, I ate a lot of food that I have had before. However, I also tried a new dish. In Vietnamese, it is called hủ tiếu xào. The word xào means stir fry, and hủ tiếu is a type of noodles that are thinner than bún. My friend’s mom made this dish for my friend and me a few days ago.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

It was delicious! Rất ngon! (Really tasty/delicious!) I’ve had hủ tiếu in broth before, but hủ tiếu xào might be better. I haven’t decided yet. I ate two bowls of it, though. Also, it was made for my friend and me by her mom, so I was happy to try it.

How is the food prepared?:

The hủ tiếu xào I had was prepared by stir-frying hủ tiếu noodles with vegetables and small pieces of pork. Once that is ready, a serving for each person is placed into bowls.
