A Girl's Life in Japan

Introduction:

Third-graders in Japan like Mina go to elementary school on the weekdays. She had a lot of interesting things to say about her life in Japan! Do you have anything in common with Mina? What about things that are different?

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

I eat bread for breakfast. For lunch, I usually eat rice with either fish or furikake (a kind of seasoning that is sprinkled over rice). For dinner, I eat macaroni and cheese, or fish and rice.

What is your house like?:

It's a mess! We have a table with chairs and two bathrooms. My room is tatami (a traditional style in Japan, with woven mats on the floor) and has lots of bunny baby dolls. We have a big backyard and I have eight pet sea urchins.

What chores do you have at home?:

No chores, but sometimes I help take out the trash.

What jobs do your parents have?:

My dad draws houses (he's an architect). My mom is a teacher but right now she cleans the house.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

School starts at 8:00 or 8:30. Going home depends on the day... if there is 5th period, I go home around 2:20 in the afternoon, but if there's 6th period, I go home around 3:30.
