The weather in Italy has been gorgeous over the past week. Most days, it has been sunny with temperatures in the mid-70s – not too hot and not too cold! The exception was in the city of Matera. Matera has a much drier climate than Rome and the coastal regions. This means that it’s warm during the day but windy and chilly at night. So, my fellow tour members and I needed to remember to pack sweaters or light jackets when we went out for dinner.
This week, I visited a buffalo farm in Italy’s Campania region. If you’re a pizza-lover, then you know that the cheese typically used on pizza is mozzarella. However, what you may not know is that while mozzarella in the United States is typically made with cow milk, the most traditional and authentic mozzarella in Italy uses milk from water buffalo.
Our tour group had a chance to tour the water buffalo farm to see the animals being milked and the mozzarella cheese being processed by hand.
