Paella, pronounced (pah-EH-yah), is one of Spain's most traditional dishes and is often served for sharing among a group of people. This means that when you're eating paella, everyone at the table can share the amazing flavors and experience the dish together.
For my first paella, I chose a paella de marisco (seafood paella), because it was something that my group collectively wanted to try, and we all shared the same love for seafood. It was something I probably wouldn't have ordered back home if I saw it on a menu, but hearing so much about paella before coming to Spain made us excited to finally try it. Even the people around us were ordering paella and enjoying it together.
My roommate and I were eager to try our first paella because we'd heard so much about this famous Spanish dish. I enjoyed trying the different seafood and combining my love for seafood with the rich flavors of the rice and sauce. Trying paella made us more curious about other Spanish foods, especially dishes involving seafood, because it tasted so different from the seafood we usually have back home.
