Hey, third graders!

As we wrap up our time together, I’ve been thinking about some of the lessons I have learned since coming to Cambodia. Living in Cambodia has taught me to appreciate what I have and to find joy in simple things. I have learned how fun it is to try new things: new clothes, new foods, and even a new language! I've also learned how impactful a big smile and a cheerful “hello!” can be.

From the day I arrived in Cambodia, I have been amazed by how friendly and generous the people here are. After learning more about Cambodian history, I realized that people here are not only kind, but also resilient. To be resilient means to have the strength to overcome a difficult circumstance. 50 years ago in Cambodia, a dangerous organization overthrew the Cambodian government. This organization was called the Khmer Rouge, and they controlled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. During this time, people were forced to leave their homes and move to the countryside to work under terrible conditions. Anyone who was educated or did not obey the rules set by the Khmer Rouge was killed. An estimated two million Cambodians died from 1975 to 1979, or about one in every four people.
