You can’t find a more quintessentially Scottish food than haggis, so I took it upon myself to try this treasured dish for the very first time as research for this article.
Haggis, the national dish of Scotland, is a savory sausage made of sheep’s offal (heart, liver and lungs) minced with onion, oats and spices. Although I tried just a plain serving of haggis on its own, haggis can be found in myriad forms in Scotland, including on pizza, on burgers, on fries and in quesadillas. Haggis even comes in vegetarian varieties!
I follow a primarily pescetarian diet, but I allow myself to eat meat other than fish on very special occasions, such as Thanksgiving and, in this case, a celebration for the start of my adventures in Scotland! So what did I think of the taste? Much better than I expected! A savory meat flavor and not much else. A little dry. I think I would have enjoyed it more with a gravy of some kind. But then again, not terrible. I tried it with a group of friends, and some of them enjoyed it much more than I did. It’s all a matter of taste, after all! My experience showed that even if a dish sounds peculiar, it’s likely not as bad as you expect it to be!
