Elyse's Journey to Romania

Current Location

Cairo, Egypt

My journey is a Fulbright ETA to the University of Oradea, Romania. Fulbright is a program where the American State Department sends scholars around the world to teach and learn from other countries.

Logbooks

This week I journeyed to the capital of Translyvania, now a region of modern Romania. This city, Cluj-Napoca, is medival and culturally compex--with German, Byzantine, and Slavic influences.

Journals

I visited Egypt and found a complex, diverse society governed by religious tradition and economic hardship. I visited holy relics and the Nile River, and was caught in a dust storm in the desert!

Field Notes

Romania is deeply informed by tradition, particularly in rural settings. Music and dance, folklore and medicine are all guided by traditions that are passed down through families and communities.

Albums

These photos are of Brașov, a city in Transylvania in the Carpathian Mountians. I visited here last week because my best friend came to visit Romania. Brașov is a Germanic town founded in 1211.
