The 40-Year-Old Soup

Introduction:

Bangkok is known as the street food capital of the world. Wherever you go, there are stands filled with all types of delicious food. From skewers to squid to mango with sticky rice, you find everything. When I arrived here, I knew I was surrounded by some of the best dishes in the world, so I made it a mission to dine in at least one Michelin star restaurant a week. A Michelin star is a sort of award/grade given to a restaurant by a travel recommendation company for restaurants. They are difficult awards to earn, so when a restaurant is awarded one it speaks to the great quality of food they have.

What food did I try?:

I have been in Bangkok for two weeks now, so I have been to two restaurants. The first was Soi Polo, a restaurant known for its fried chicken. I wrote about it in my first article and mentioned how it was my favorite meal I have had so far. Then I tried the 40-year-old beef stew. Wattana Panich is the name of a restaurant in the Ekkamai neighborhood in downtown Bangkok. It has a cauldron that has been brewing with a beef stew for over 40 years, and last week I had it for the first time.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

Initially, I was nervous to try the soup! A cauldron that has been stewing with different spices and cuts of beef for over 40 years tends to develop a weird smell.
