Our News

I have been hearing this song a lot on the radio, at the gym and especially when going out with friends. An important part of costeño (coastal) culture is music and dancing. Therefore, those songs with the most catchy rhythms, like this one, are often the most popular here.

What activity was the most fun this week?:

This week I participated in the most important holiday in Barranquilla, Carnaval! It is a four-day celebration with parades during the day and parties in the evening. The costumes, floats, and dancing at the parades were incredible! I hope to share more about this experience with you all in the future.

What did I read this week?:

I listen to and read the news everyday. In Colombia, there have been many news reports lately about the situation in Venezuela. This week, I read about a terrible power outage that left most of the country without power. It has been going on for several days now. Maduro, the president, is blaming the U.S. for the outage.

What games or sports did I play this week?:

I do not really participate in organized sports here, but I do like going to the park at the end of my block. In the evenings, dance groups rehearse in the park and young people often play basketball. I usually go to the park in the evenings with the women in my house and with Ivana, the three-year-old in the apartment nextdoor. Ivana loves the swings!
