One difference between the United States and the Czech Republic is that, here, it is customary to pay for water at restaurants, even if it is from the tap!
This week, I went out to lunch with my friends and had a cheesy butternut squash pasta with mushrooms. It was delicious! Some honorary mentions were tiramisu (a type of Italian cake), another plate of fried cheese and homemade chicken nachos.
This week, the program I am on bought tickets to an opera! I had never been to an opera before and did not know what to expect. There were a live orchestra, ballerinas and opera singers. The performance, Rusalka, created by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, has a plot very similar to The Little Mermaid; they are actually based on the same fairy tale!
My program took us on a tour of Pilsen. We walked through a bottle recycling plant to see how the process works in the Czech Republic. We also toured old ice caves, which were used over 100 years ago to store food and beverages. The caves were beautiful but very cold!
I had midterms this week, so to prepare, I reread some of my courses’ assigned readings. One of my classes, called Prague as a Living History, is a once-a-week, three-hour-long class where we walk all over the city. It is basically like a private tour that counts for credit! For homework, we read sections from books, articles and textbooks about the history of Prague. After reviewing the material, I took the midterm, and I feel really confident about my answers!
