The Hermit Kingdom

Korea is completely surrounded by sea as well. Therefore, seafood is also widely accessible. In recent centuries, Korea's location between China and Japan has also allowed it to be a point of cultural exchange. Confucianism, Buddhism and paper traveled eastward from China to Korea to Japan.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

One of the greatest environmental challenges that Koreans face today is air pollution. In recent years, the high concentration of fine dust in the air has made walking outside without a mask dangerous for many people. Most people check air pollution quality every day in order to see whether they need to wear a mask. This has become such a large cultural phenomenon that there are even special apps for your phone to check the air condition, and different brands create their own designs for masks.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Koreans adapt to their environment in many ways. In order to keep from getting sick because of air pollution, most people wear masks. Due to the need for more arable land, Koreans have adopted different methods to increase the efficiency of their land. For example, much of Korea's agriculture landscape is stepped farming, which creates the look of beautifully grooved hills.
