Getting Around the City of Seoul

Introduction:

Seoul’s public transportation system is respected as one of the best in the world. It’s well organized, easy to use and cheap. At this point, you may be wondering how it performs at such a high standard. One of the main reasons is the city simply needs it to. With a population density almost twice that of New York City, people wouldn’t be able to get around otherwise. A little more than a decade ago, the Seoul City Board recognized that heavy traffic and pollution were serious problems in the city. The most important plan of action was to improve the public transportation system. Now, the intricate geography of the city is impressively connected by a network of subways and buses that serves about eight million passengers each day!

How do people get around?:

Most people get around Seoul by taking either the subway or bus. The subway is the fastest and easiest mode of transportation. There are 21 lines that connect the different areas of Seoul and even connect Seoul to other cities. Did you know that Seoul has the longest urban metro system in the world? In 2013, it was reported to span 584 miles! The subway can get you almost anywhere in Seoul, however, if there’s someplace the subway can’t bring you, the bus system most likely can. The bus system has almost 400 routes after all!
