I also discovered my love for neuroscience, the study of the brain. Then, I had an amazing opportunity: I got to study abroad in Salamanca, Spain!
At first, it was difficult. The food, the weather and even the way people spoke all felt different. I made mistakes. I had to ask people to repeat things many times. But little by little, my Spanish improved. I made new friends. I explored the city. I even started thinking in Spanish!
Immersing myself in learning Spanish changed my life. It allowed me to connect with new people in a new country. It helped me share my experiences with my family back home. But most of all, it gave me the confidence to keep learning and exploring the world.
Learning English can do the same for you. It will open doors to new places, new friendships, and new opportunities.
When I finished university, I felt a longing to give back to the country that had taught me so much. Now, thanks to the Fulbright program, I get to live in Spain for a whole year, teaching English to pre-school and elementary school students!
But this time, I'm not living in mainland Spain. I'm living in the Canary Islands, a group of volcanic islands just 62 miles off the coast of Morocco. They are famous for their otherworldly volcanic landscapes, warm weather and beautiful beaches.
More specifically, I live in Las Palmas, a city on the island of Gran Canaria. The ocean is just a short walk from my apartment, and I love listening to the waves as I run along the seawall. Right now, I’m training for a marathon, a race that is 26.2 miles long! With warm, sunny weather almost all year, it’s the perfect place to be outside.
