Eating Sushi in Japan

Introduction:

Sushi is a popular dish both in Japan and overseas. I wanted to try authentic Japanese sushi, so I went to a sushi restaurant here and ordered some popular kinds of sushi. While sushi is quite different in Japan than it is in America or other places, I enjoyed it very much: it was fresh and delicious and filling.

What food did I try?:

I tried many different types of sushi, and all of them had very different tastes. I sometimes feel nervous about eating uncooked foods, but sushi is so fresh in Japan that you never need to worry about falling ill. Each kind of sushi has a different flavor. My favorites are salmon, squid, mackerel, scallops, and salmon roe (fish eggs).

How did I feel when I tried it?:

When I was younger, I didn't like to eat fish at all. And sushi in Japan is different from sushi in America: it isn't usually cooked, and does not come with extra toppings or ingredients (for example, a California roll is a popular American sushi with avocado and imitation crab, but one you can never find in Japan)! I'm glad I tried authentic Japanese sushi, because I really liked it.

How is the food prepared?:

White rice is cooked, then cooled and mixed with rice vinegar. Meanwhile, a chef cuts pieces of raw fish very carefully. The raw fish is then placed on top of the rice.
