One of the things I love about Prague is how many ways there are to get around without owning a car! The city has above-ground trains, underground subway trains called the metro, trams, buses and even Uber. There are also scooters, and of course, plenty of walking! Depending on where I'm going, I can choose between walking through the neighborhoods, hopping on a tram or taking the metro across the city.
Coming from Upstate New York, where most people really need a car, it's been quite an adjustment. Here, I can get to university, go grocery shopping, visit restaurants and explore different neighborhoods using public transportation.
If you could travel anywhere in your city without needing someone to drive you, where would you go first?
One of the most interesting places I've visited recently wasn't a castle, museum or famous tourist attraction. It was a train station! Prague's main railway station (Praha hlavní nádraží) has a historic section that looks more like the inside of a palace than somewhere you'd catch a train. When I looked up, I saw this enormous domed ceiling surrounded by statues, decorative artwork and colorful coats of arms. The amount of detail was incredible! What makes it even more interesting is the contrast between the historic architecture and the modern transportation system operating around it.
As someone who enjoys architecture and history, I find it fascinating that an ordinary place people pass through every day can hold so much beauty.
