"Di to Biela" or Goodbye For Now!

The first thing I noticed was how both US and Ghanaian kids love to play soccer. It is the main pastime for all kids and is played before, during and after school. I also noticed that kids are the same no matter what country you are in. They all have best friends, play with each other, laugh together, play pranks on one another, go to class, take tests, do homework and fight with their parents. They are all going through the same stages of growing up which I think is pretty cool.

If there is one thing I am most excited to take back with me to the US from Ghana it is the sense of community. In Ghana, everyone cares for one another like they are family. Everyone is referred to as "auntie", "uncle", "sister" or "brother" even if you are not related. This is because they really do see their community as an extension of their own family. It is expected that if a child is crying, whoever is closest will go and take care of that child even if it is not theirs. The community helps build each other up and support one another in times of need. I think this is so beautiful and something that is not common for neighborhoods in America.

I am so grateful for everything I have experienced during my first year here. I know there are so many amazing things to come during this next year!
