I was hired by the United States Antarctic Program to work as a safety technician at McMurdo Station for the summer and South Pole Station for the winter. Holy smokes! I was going to get to go down and see the building where IceCube works. It felt like a dream come true. I was getting to winter over at the South Pole. Such a unique privilege that so few people get to do. I thought I was at the climax of my career when I walked into the IceCube Laboratory to check their fire extinguishers. That was until I got my next job two years later.
My current job is going down as a grantee to be the safety officer for the installation of the IceCube Upgrade this austral summer season 2025-2026. I will be going down to Antarctica to do more than support science, I will be building a telescope. What do you call your dream come true that you gave up on? That is bigger than your biggest, wildest, most impossible dream come true? If you have any feedback, I am all ears, because I honestly do not know. Maybe it is just called a job? Whatever you call it, want to come along with me on this virtual exchange? I have brought you up to date on the past few decades of my life, but as we move forward from here, I hope to slow down a little bit and share more details of this amazing…adventure, experience, job, dream?… Whatever you think it should be called.
