I do appreciate the food the galley has prepared, though! It is nice to be able to focus on my work. We also got this really great box of "Snacks in support of IceCube". It has all sorts of yummy treats! Bars, chips and all sorts. I love the chocolate-covered peanuts the most. The fudge strip cookies are also a big hit.
Last week we had the Thanksgiving meal - real mashed potatoes! Some of my favourites. Also, cranberry sauce, turkey, stuffing, roasted carrots and kumara. Fresh bread rolls with a delicious honey butter. Dessert was apple-cranberry pie with chocolate mousse. There was also pumpkin and pecan pie. It was all so nice. I had a food coma afterwards, and the leftovers the next day were so good. I hope everyone out there is eating as much fresh fruit and vegetables as they can!
Food here is prepared just like anywhere else. The station is home to a full kitchen and staffed by an amazing team, including dedicated chefs and bakers. One thing that is different about preparing food at the South Pole is that nearly all of the food at the station is frozen. But you would hardly know it looking at the amazing dishes the kitchen staff cooks up!
During the summer months, fresh fruits and vegetables, known as “freshies,” are accessible, which makes meal time especially exciting. During the winter months, a hydroponic garden at the station provides enough fresh produce for about one salad per person per week.
